Teaching crisis #16374:
There are very few things in the whole wide world that I find less interesting to talk about than education. Uh oh.
I went to a "literacy team" meeting today and I wanted to poke my own eyes out. I am uninterested in the statistics for literacy and, to be totally honest, literacy in general. I mean, I wish everyone could read. I know that it is important. But it just doesn't yank at my heart strings or intellect in any way.
Oh, thank god it is Friday. Today I told someone I was not a Christian (she asked me outright) and she totally and completely sneered at me as though I had passed gas. That was a first. ¶ 5:02 PM

The mystery of the beans goes unanswered. I guess there are some things that we are just not meant to know...
However, the kids being suspended was due to the fact that they took a boy into the bathroom and beat him up. Yeah, administration can be so picky about that. So they are gone for 5 days.
Other wonderful things that occurred in the time that I was gone:
The kids were leaving class in the middle and not coming back.
They rifled through my supply cabinet and stole all my stuff.
They ripped things off the walls.
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.
They are awful. So I had them write me essays about how to act when there is a sub and to tell me all of their behaviors and the behaviors of their classmates while I was gone. They are hilarious essays. I may publish a few.
Oy, help me. I still have to deal with the ones that are left, few of them that there are. I seriously have less than half of my third period left, due to suspensions and expulsions. Yikes. ¶ 9:08 AM

The first report of the morning about how my kids did with their sub:
"Man, there were beans everywhere. Not the cooked kind- the hard kind. I mean, everywhere!"
Keep in mind that I am an ENGLISH teacher...no need for beans in my class. Oh, and five of my kids are suspended.

So, here I am, in Chapel Hill. I am waiting to hear more about my car, which broke down. Things were going so well-- the guy called and said that it was just what he thought...a little problem with a hose. Then he called again to tell me that my transmission isn't bolted down at all to anything. So I guess my transmission has just been floating around under the hood-- which explains the weird "thump" and jerky thing it does when it changes gears. What in the world? He was uncertain about what it would take to fix it. This sucks.

I missed my first day of school on Friday and my kids had a substitute. A fellow teacher called me today and told me that my kids ate the sub alive. I sort of think that is funny.
I can't imagine a total stranger trying to control these children. Good lord. I can barely do it and I know a bunch of tricks. Then, coming to Chapel Hill on Saturday, my car exploded on the highway and I have to get it fixed on Monday. That means I will miss another day of school.
God help the sub. God help me when I return to the monsters. ¶ 3:44 PM
