Is it just me or was America's Top Model a little lacking this week? Nothing really happened. Where was Anne and her hysterics? I did start to like the blind model a little less. She's kind of a dumb-ass.

Yesterday was a work day at school. No kids. I wish we had work days every other Friday. I think I may actually plan good units, then. I managed to create a 5 week unit for Anne Frank that I am proud of. I never do stuff like that. We will see how it is to not fly by the seat of my pants.

I don't think anyone here really thinks that yesterday's performance was troubling. I am faced with the same delimma as last year. Do you come into a community and try to change it against everyone's will? Or do you just witness and try to make changes in individuals? In a lot of ways, I feel like I am subversive enough in my classroom to make it okay to not fight these bigger (and honestly, more scary) battles. But I could also just be making excuses.

In other news, I have to go to the dentist again today and they are going to do stuff to me. With needles. And then with other awful tools. I am not phobic of the dentist or anything. I think I have all the normal fears. But it still sucks. So tonight I will look like a chipmunk...without all the cute fur and neat tail that makes it okay to look like a chipmunk. Anyone want to make me soup?

The only nice thing is that I get to take half a day off of work. And that I don't have to work at the bookstore.

I am going to have my house/apartment warming party on Saturday. You should come. (Lara, haven't you always wanted to come to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for the weekend? Now is your chance...!) A more specific invitation to follow.

Today we went to an assembly. At this assembly, a bunch of church kids sang songs about God. Then, in between songs, they told the kids "inspirational" stories. These stories were intended to have the kids turn their lives away from drugs and toward God. Things that were said at this public school this morning:

"My girlfriend had gotten pregnant. I was only thirteen. She had an abortion. That was when I realized things were serious! I mean, I helped commit murder! At only thirteen. She was the one who really murdered our child, but I was a little bit responsible."

"I thought that gangs were fun. But really all it was was people telling me to rape girls. So I raped ‘em. And it wasn’t cool."

"Now I don’t do drugs! Praise Jesus!"

What the hell should I do? I find it utterly reprehensible to tell a bunch of young (some of whom will be pregnant or already are) kids that abortion is murder. That isn’t the schools job. And I just find the raping girls comment disgusting and completely inappropriate for this age level, especially.

I don’t know what to do. Should I complain to the principal? Should I make a fuss? I mean, I was overlooking the fact that they were singing Jesus songs at school, but I think I am being asked to overlook a lot here.

Yikes.

First Year Teacher is now actually not a teacher anymore and she doesn't live in North Carolina, no matter what you may have heard. She now works for a youth development organization and lives in Portland, Oregon.
